METAIRIE, La. — The Grinch came after Alvin Kamara’s Christmas-themed cleats, after all.
The New Orleans Saints running back was fined $5,000 by the NFL after wearing a pair of red and green cleats that didn’t match his uniform colors while rushing for six touchdowns on Christmas Day. Apparently, the league won’t even bend the rules when a player ties a 91-year-old record.

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara has been placed on the Covid-19 list, leaving his playing status for Sunday’s regular-season finale at the Carolina Panthers in question.
Kamara, in his fourth season out of Tennessee, turned in an historic performance in the team’s Christmas Day victory over the Minnesota Vikings as he rushed for six touchdowns, tying a 91-year-old league record.
Kamara carried 22 times for a career-high 155 yards (7.0 avg.), adding three receptions for 17 yards for 172 total yards from scrimmage against the Vikings. The rushing touchdowns record tied the record held by Ernie Nevers of the Chicago Cardinals, set Nov. 28, 1929, while for total touchdowns, Kamara joins Nevers, the Cleveland Browns’ Dub Jones (Nov. 25, 1951) and the Chicago Bears’ Gale Sayers (Dec.12, 1965).
Kamara has carried 187 times for a career-high 932 yards (5.0 avg.) with 16 touchdowns this season, tied for first in the NFL. He leads all running backs in receiving with a career-best and team-leading 83 receptions for 756 yards (9.1 avg.) with five touchdowns. Kamara, who will be only the second Saints player to lead the team in both rushing and receiving, currently leads the NFL with a franchise-record 21 total touchdowns after his Christmas Day scoring outburst, is ranked second in the league with 93 first downs and third with a career-best 1,688 total yards from scrimmage, the seventh-highest total in club history. He is the only Saint to be selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons.
Kamara is the second player the team placed on the list this week, joining defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

The Chiefs possessed the ball for over 41 minutes. The Saints had it for under 19.
I couldn’t think of a worse formula for success than to give Patrick Mahomes, and that Kansas City offense, a 22-minute edge in time of possession.
After processing how this game went, it’s truly amazing that it was as close as it was. Usually that kind of disparity results in a thirty-point loss. The Saints made it a respectable three- point defeat.
They were able to hang in mainly because of the defense. They certainly weren’t perfect, but they gave the offense enough opportunities to stay in it. 32 points allowed on 92 Chiefs offensive plays isn’t a bad ratio.
The skewed possession numbers fall squarely on the shoulders of the offense. The Saints just couldn’t stay on the field. A team that prides themselves on third down only managed to convert one out of 11 tries. The lack of conversions led to a lack of plays which led to a lack of possessions.
Look no further than that as to why the Saints lost the game.
METAIRIE, La. — Drew Brees is set to return to the New Orleans Saints’ starting lineup in time for Sunday’s marquee matchup against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, according to coach Sean Payton.
Payton said Friday that the plan is for Brees to start Sunday.
“He’s looked good. He feels good,” Payton said. “We were encouraged at the start of the week. We wanted to see how it felt as he went through a full practice week, and he’s done a good job.”
The news wasn’t so good for star receiver Michael Thomas.
Thomas was ruled out Friday after not practicing all week due to a lingering ankle injury. Thomas had played through the injury since returning to the lineup in Week 9.
Sean Payton’s decision to start Taysom Hill over Jameis Winston in relief of the injured Drew Brees raised a lot of eyebrows around the New Orleans Saints’ orbit. Winston, signed as a free agent this year, was the proven commodity with extensive starting experience. Hill was seen as an undeveloped athlete.
But it’s mostly worked out so far, with the Saints going 3-1 under Hill’s game management. That doesn’t mean the offense hasn’t had its ups and downs with Hill at the helm. Payton explained how they got here on a recent episode of the “Huddle and Flow” podcast with NFL analysts Steve Wyche and Jim Trotter, saying that this was an opportunity Hill had earned after years of hard work in New Orleans.
The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field. The award was established in 1970. It was renamed in 1999 after the late Hall of Fame Chicago Bears running back, Walter Payton. Each team nominates one player who has had a significant positive impact on his community. This year the Saints have nominated Demario Davis #56 !
