EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Alvin Kamara might finally get a breather when backfield mate Mark Ingram returns from his four-game suspension next week.
But the New Orleans Saints sure are fortunate that he lived up to his leading-man role when they kept needing him in September.
Kamara’s 49-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 6 seconds remaining finally sent the New York Giants fans flooding for the exits as the Saints held on for a sometimes-sloppy 33-18 victory on Sunday.
METAIRIE, La. — Alvin Kamara’s advice to Saquon Barkley might not have been too insightful. But so far, it has been perfectly accurate.
The two dynamic running backs — who might wind up winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in back-to-back seasons if Barkley can fend off this year’s loaded quarterback crop — met for the first time in January. Kamara was making his Pro Bowl debut and Barkley was training for pre-draft workouts in Orlando, Florida.
No one saw this coming.
I didn’t. You didn’t. The experts predicting a New Orleans Super Bowl run didn’t. And safe to say, the Saints didn’t.
A 48-40 setback. To the Tampa Bay Bucs. At home.
Losses don’t get much worse than this.
It wasn’t so much what the Bucs did as how they did it that made this setback so dispiriting for the Saints and their legion of loyal fans. They embarrassed the Saints and stunned a sellout crowd by piling up 529 yards and a franchise-record-tying 48 points.
It was the second most points ever allowed by the Saints in an opening game and tied for the seventh most allowed in the history of the franchise.
METAIRIE, La. — Coach Sean Payton didn’t need to hear the end of the question.

“It’s been a while,” Payton interrupted. “We just went through the numbers [in a team meeting].”
Specifically, it has been five years since the Saints last won a season opener in 2013. And, yes, players said, it was a big talking point during Payton’s first meeting with the team this week — with a whole power-point display and everything.

If Friday’s practice is any indication, that should work.
The New Orleans Saints’ second-year safety broke up a pair of Drew Brees passes on back-to-back plays during full-team drills on the second day of training camp — again flashing the type of playmaking ability that he demonstrated throughout his breakout rookie season.
But Williams knew that wasn’t what he would be asked about most after Friday’s practice.

The 2017 draft will go down in history as one of the best in New Orleans Saints history.
The seven-man haul featured five eventual starters, including the offensive and defensive rookies of the year in Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore.
The class played a big role in the Saints’ vault from 7-9 to 11-5 and the NFC South championship last season. It’s already being compared to the Saints’ famed 2006 draft class, widely considered the best in club history.
It would be unfair to compare the Saints’ seven-man draft class this year with the 2017 bunch. It would be almost impossible for this year’s group to match its predecessor in terms of impact or production.
This draft was less about stars and starters than it was about depth and development.

Drew Brees will remain, and likely will finish his Hall of Fame career, as a New Orleans Saint.
Brees, the best player in franchise history, and the Saints agreed to a two-year contract Tuesday that will push Brees to 19 NFL seasons, 14 with the Saints. During the next two years, among the NFL records within Brees’ reach is passing yards (he has 70,445; Peyton Manning’s record is 71,940) and touchdown passes (Brees sits at 488; Manning’s record is 539).
“I think that provides, certainly, the team with the most flexibility when it comes to being able to anticipate the future and the ability to acquire free agents and re-sign players on our existing roster that will build a championship team,” Brees told ESPN.
INDIANAPOLIS — The New Orleans Saints had an incredible 2017 draft class, and as the process played out, coach Sean Payton was surprised how the board fell in their favor.
Before the draft, Payton thought the 42nd overall pick in the second round would be a good spot to pick Tennessee running back Alvin Kamara. The expectation that Kamara or other talented players would be available was a reason the Saints didn’t want to trade the second-round pick away, perhaps in a potential Malcolm Butler deal.
However, when the Saints were on the clock, another player they’d given a first-round grade was still available, Utah safety Marcus Williams.
