New Orleans Saints won’t take Seattle Seahawks lightly

By Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune

There is a lot of mystery heading into Saturday’s NFC wild-card playoff game between the New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks.

Some five days before kickoff, questions abound.

Who will quarterback the Seahawks, Charlie Whitehurst or Matt Hasselbeck?

Will the Saints have enough backs and tight ends to field a traditional 11-man offense?

New Orleans Saints are confident they can win on the road

By John DeShazier, The Times-Picayune

A tsunami of ado over the New Orleans Saints‘ regular-season finish last season dissipated to nothing, as the confident team justified every clenched-tooth reply.

Then, they calmly and defiantly sang the chorus that three consecutive losses entering the playoffs meant nothing to them, that the previous historical absolute that no team ever had done that and won a Super Bowl was moot, because none of the prior teams were these Saints.

So they’re accustomed to ado.

Good thing, too, because there’s more of it where that came from after Sunday’s 23-13 loss to Tampa Bay in the regular-season finale at the Superdome.

Quick Take: Saints at Seahawks

By Pat Yasinskas

Three things to know about next Saturday’s New Orleans SaintsSeattle Seahawks wild-card game:

1. Is Seattle’s home-field advantage really a disadvantage for the Saints? Qwest Field can be very loud and the weather could be a factor. But this Saints team doesn’t seem to know the difference between home and the road.

In the 2009 and 2010 seasons, the Saints have lost only four games on the road. One of those losses was at Carolina at the end of the 2009 season when the Saints were resting their starters. The Saints played perhaps their worst game of the last two years at Arizona earlier this season. But the only other road losses came this year against quality teams, Atlanta and Baltimore.

Saints face rough road to repeat

By Pat Yasinskas

NEW ORLEANS –- If you go only by conventional wisdom, the New Orleans Saints aren’t in great shape as they head into the playoffs.

After Sunday’s 23-13 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Saints seem to have lost momentum. They seem burdened by injuries. But these Saints sometimes defy the laws of conventional wisdom. That’s how they won a Super Bowl championship last season. Despite Sunday’s stumble, the Saints, 11-5, believe they have a chance to repeat.

“Our expectations are exactly the same as when we came into the season,’’ quarterback Drew Brees said. “There’s no reason we can’t do it again.’

New Orleans Saints get opportunity to disprove doubters

By Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune

It sounds crazy but the Atlanta Falcons’ victory against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday might be the best thing for the New Orleans Saints.

Now the Saints have their work cut out for them.

Now they have the entire football world discounting their chances of defending their Super Bowl title.

Now they have the challenge of a lifetime in front of their face masks.

Grading the New Orleans Saints in their loss to Tampa Bay Buccaneers

By James Varney, The Times-Picayune

Grading the New Orleans Saints in their 23-13 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at the Superdome:

Offense: 1 fleur-de-lis

Coach Sean Payton intimated things might have been different if the Saints hadn’t fumbled near the goal line in the second quarter, and he might be right. But Julius Jones did fumble, and the offense never seemed to regain its touch against the visiting Buccaneers. Quarterback Drew Brees was guiding a unit depleted by injuries — three starters were inactive and two others, tight end Jimmy Graham and running back Chris Ivory, left the game in the first half. These are ominous signs, but so, too, were the three turnovers. Some of the team’s turnovers, including Brees’ interception, were the result of bad luck or bad breaks, but there is no changing the fact New Orleans’ regular season turnover margin of minus-6 isn’t a championship statistic.
