New Orleans Saints hope bye brings health, consistency

AP

The defending champion New Orleans Saints have demonstrated that they can defend with the best in the NFL this season.

If Coach Sean Payton’s offense regains its prolific form of the past four years, the Big Easy could find itself gearing up for another round of Lombardi Gras, as post Super Bowl celebrations around here have become known.

NFC title contenders beginnings to emerge

James Varney, The Times-Picayune

The NFC at just past the midpoint of the 2010 season has been dominated by two circuses and a handful of near-Cinderellas.

Although considerable football remains to be played, the contenders for the postseason are beginning to emerge from a preseason in which the Dallas Cowboys were expected to be among them. Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants fans, for instance, are likely to see their heroes play more than one game in early 2011, as are, to a less certain degree, Who Dats everywhere.

Pretrial Hearing Held In ‘Who Dat’ Lawsuit

NEW ORLEANS  — WDSU .com

A pretrial hearing was held in federal court on Wednesday in the copyright lawsuit over who owns the beloved Saints slogan, “Who Dat?”

Josh Harvey, owner of the Storyville T-shirt shop, took time away from his store to spend several hours in court. His shop and others are part of the lawsuit that has many local businesses in legal limbo until a final decision is made.

Who owns Who Dat??

NEW ORLEANS — In the New Orleans lexicon, the phrase “Who Dat?” may be as ubiquitous as they come, but the question over who owns the commercial use of the phrase reached a federal courtroom on Wednesday morning.

Attorneys representing the NFL and the Saints, along with several local merchants, appeared before Federal Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans. The NFL is attempting to get parts of a lawsuit against them thrown out. The lawsuit has been brought by Who Dat, Inc., which claims to have trademarked the phrase.

“They’re trying to prohibit us from using the name ‘Who Dat,'” said Darleen Jacobs,  an attorney and one of the five merchants named in the suit. She is co-owner of the “Who Dat Yat Chat,” a cafe in St. Bernard Parish. “We actually have a charter from the state of Louisiana, saying that we can use the term ‘Who Dat.’ We also have a trademark in Louisiana.”

Midseason Stock Watch: Saints

By Pat Yasinskas

Where they stand: They’re the defending Super Bowl champions, but you wouldn’t know it from listening to their fans, coaches and players. The Saints haven’t been nearly as dominant as last year, when they won their first 13 games. The offense hasn’t been nearly as explosive and the defense hasn’t been as opportunistic. But the fact is, the Saints are 6-3. They’re only a game behind division leader Atlanta in the loss column and no NFC team has won more games than the Saints.

NFC South one of juiciest division races midway through season

AP

Here’s a quick way to get dizzy: Look for the defending division champions in the current NFL standings.

Instant vertigo.

Not one division winner from 2009 is alone on top this season. The New England Patriots (6-2) and Indianapolis Colts (5-3) are tied for first place in their sectors, and the others are either playing catch-up or are also-rans.

How teams got where they are halfway through the schedule, and where they might be headed:

Wrap-up: Saints 34, Panthers 3

By Pat Yasinskas

What it means: This game went exactly the way you would expect. The Saints, who haven’t been dominant this season, were dominant. The Panthers, who’ve been pathetic all season, were pathetic and had injuries (quarterback Matt Moore and running back Jonathan Stewart) added to insult.
