How I See It: NFC South Stock Watch

By Pat Yasinskas

FALLING

3. New Orleans’ offensive line. It’s not what it was a year ago. That’s a little disappointing because the line returned intact, but it hasn’t been dominant. Drew Brees is getting pressured more than usual, the running game’s been only ordinary and All-Pro guard Jahri Evans has developed a sudden knack for getting called for holding penalties.

RISING

3. Usama Young, safety, Saints. He’s usually just a special-teams player. But a series of injuries forced him into the strong safety spot in Sunday’s victory against Carolina. With the Panthers close to the range where they could kick a game-winning field goal, Young stepped up and had a tackle where he dropped DeAngelo Williams for a four-yard loss. That and a sack by free safety Malcolm Jenkins on the next play took the Panthers definitively out of field-goal range.

Defenses treating Saints differently

By Pat Yasinskas

Although the New Orleans Saints are 3-1, it’s hard not to look at the offensive numbers and spot at least some causes for concern.

The Saints are averaging 19.8 points a game. Through four games last season, they were averaging 36 points. They’ve averaged 344 yards in total offense. At this point last season, they were averaging 414.3 yards.

So what’s been the difference?

New Orleans Saints safety Chris Reis will miss the rest of the season with shoulder injury, league source confirms

Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints safety Chris Reis will be placed on injured reserve and miss the remainder of the season with the shoulder injury he suffered in Sunday’s victory over the Carolina Panthers, a league source confirmed.

The exact injury was not specified, but it will require surgery. Coach Sean Payton indicated earlier Monday that Reis’ injury was serious, confirming that he would be out for this week’s game at the Arizona Cardinals, at the very least.

New Orleans Saints cornerback Tracy Porter expected to miss 2-4 weeks with sprained knee, according to source

Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints cornerback Tracy Porter is expected to miss about two to four weeks after suffering an apparent medial collateral injury in his left knee, a league source confirmed.

Porter came back into Sunday’s game briefly after suffering the injury during the Carolina Panthers’ final offensive drive. But tests revealed a slight tear on Monday, according to a source. Porter tweeted the cryptic words, “Why me?”

New Orleans Saints injury update: Hoping to get safety Roman Harper, tailback Pierre Thomas back

Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton said safety Chris Reis won’t play this week against the Arizona Cardinals after suffering a shoulder injury during Sunday’s 16-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The extent of Reis’ injury wasn’t known yet, pending tests today. But the Saints will prepare to move on without him in the short term, at least. Payton said they will bring in some free agent safeties for tryouts Tuesday – focusing heavily on guys who can help on special teams.

New Orleans Saints beat the Carolina Panthers 16-14 at the Superdome

Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune

It was another nailbiter for the New Orleans Saints, and they hold on to beat winless Carolina 16-14 at the Superdome on Sunday.

Something isn’t quite right with the Saints offense, even though they completely dominated the Panthers — 28 first downs to 17, 383 yards to 251 — but they had two critical turnovers that cost them points.
