New Orleans Saints great Rickey Jackson always wanted to be the best

Jimmy Smith, The Times-Picayune

PAHOKEE, FLA. – A generation ago, perhaps two, this city that borders Florida’s Everglades for all of its 5.4 miles was known as “the winter vegetable capital of the world.” Crops such as sugar cane, various citrus fruits, corn and soybeans thrive in the black, rich soil locals refer to as “the muck.”

Yet prosperity has long since disappeared from this quaint burg, the Native American translation of its name meaning “grassy waters.”

The Thriftway supermarket is boarded up. There are no fast-food establishments. There’s a bank and a drug store, and a small police force, and Poppa Jimmy’s Catfish & More restaurant among the city’s 6,000 residents. And Club 57, next to Sparkles Marketplace on Muck City Road, once a stylish club owned by one of this city’s most noteworthy natives, named after the number he made famous in the NFL, sits empty.

Fleur-re-port from Saints’ camp: Day 4 – afternoon; words with Adrian Arrington (slideshow)

Another story from Danny Cox !

Day four was another scorcher outside for the New Orleans Saints as training camp rolls on, but the afternoon practice was a bit cooler.

After trudging through the heat during the morning session, Coach Sean Payton moved the team inside for the afternoon. While not an over-the-top intense practice; the focus was still fully there as the Saints continue moving forward toward defending their title.

Practice Update: Tuesday, August 3 – the Saints had one outdoor practice scheduled for the afternoon with a start time of 3:20 PM. That has been changed to a morning practice starting at 8:50 AM and running for about two hours.

Fleur-re-port from Saints’ camp: Day 3 – afternoon (slideshow) – quotes from Vilma & Hartley

Another great story from Danny Cox, thanks for letting us know it was up !

Day three of Saints’ camp was a hot one indeed, but that didn’t stop the intensity of practice or the fans from turning out. Temperatures were in the mid-nineties with a heat index in triple digits yet there were still at least a thousand fans out there.

Coach Sean Payton made sure to keep his team hydrated by taking plenty of water breaks during this little over two hour practice. It was the only one of the day since there wasn’t a morning session.

Plenty of observations to be made from today’s practice session so let’s get to it. The four players still on the Active PUP list continued to sit out: Marques Colston, Darren Sharper, Robert Meachem, and Clint Ingram. Colston was seen catching some passes after practice though.

Jeremy Shockey is out, the heat is on at New Orleans Saints practice Sunday

By Jeff Duncan

The New Orleans Saints weathered triple-digit temperatures in the merciless Louisiana heat on Sunday but managed to get through the two-hour practice without incident.

The on-field temperature was 95 degrees when the practice started and the heat index reached 119 degrees at times during the two-hour workout.

“At some point in training camp you’re going to have to fight through some weather like this and we were fortunate with some cloud cover,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “It doesn’t make it tougher; I just think it’s part of getting in shape in training camp, mentally and the challenge of focusing on our job when your body starts getting tired.”

Fleur-re-port from Saints’ training camp: Day Two – afternoon session

by Danny Cox

The afternoon of day two right from the indoor training facility at the New Orleans Saints’ camp was another upbeat and fast-paced practice.

Due to the heat, the Saints were indoors again because it was just literally unbearable outside. Still, Coach Sean Payton stayed on the Super Bowl champs and made sure they weren’t lagging.

The practice started right off the bat with kickoff drills with Rod Harper, Pierre Thomas, and Courtney Roby getting most of the returns.

Gruden: New Orleans Saints can repeat

By Pat Yasinskas

METAIRIE, La. – There has never been a more colorful or quotable coach than Jon Gruden in the history of the NFC South.

Although Gruden’s now an analyst for “Monday Night Football’’ nothing really has changed. Gruden held court with a few reporters on the side of the New Orleans’ Saints practice field Saturday morning and was more entertaining than New Orleans coach Sean Payton, who talked a few minutes later. I’ll even go out on a limb and guess that what Gruden had to say was more interesting than anything that came out of Tampa, Flowery Branch, Ga., or Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday.
