Observations from New Orleans Saints’ Saturday afternoon practice

Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

  • New Orleans Saints tailback Reggie Bush impressed again during team drills. He’s looked outstanding so far during this camp, clearly benefitting from the fact that he’s been injury-free for the past 18 months. He looks fast (as usual), but he’s also running upfield with a lot of power and determination – though the defense hasn’t done any live tackling yet during team drills this camp.
  • We saw our first real “big play” from the Saints’ first-string offense in team drills this afternoon when Drew Brees scrambled and found Devery Henderson for deep touchdown pass. Henderson got behind cornerback Jabari Greer, but it appeared that the secondary had a breakdown in coverage.

Pierre Thomas seeks to bridge gap in contract dispute with New Orleans Saints

John DeShazier, The Times-Picayune

Yes, Pierre Thomas deserves a long-term, more lucrative contract.

Yes, the New Orleans Saints are within their right to have Thomas right where they have him.

Yes, they’re both right.

Sometimes it’s not that easy to find a bad guy. Sometimes there’s no way to not see and agree with where each side is coming from, and why it maintains its stance.

If I’m Thomas, damn straight I’d want to have been paid plenty, yesterday. For sure I’d believe I’ve earned more than the one-year, $1.7 million deal he signed with the Saints this summer as a restricted free agent. That’s a point even the franchise probably won’t dispute.

Early observations on the Saints

By Pat Yasinskas

METAIRIE, La. – Time for some observations from the New Orleans Saints’ first practice of camp.

  • Rookie cornerback Patrick Robinson got his contract signed, passed his physical and got on the field for a good chunk of practice. I’m not going to anoint him after one practice, but he looked good out there. Extremely athletic, and I can see him immediately being the third corner behind Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter. By the way, Robinson doesn’t seem to have the same problem with hazing as Dallas rookie Dez Bryant. Robinson walked off the field carrying the shoulder pads and helmets of some veteran members of the secondary.
  • Jon Gruden was out at practice, and I think this is a repeat of last year. That’s when Gruden spent a few days with his old buddy Sean Payton and sat in on the meetings with the quarterbacks. Coaches are often superstitious, and Payton might view Gruden as a good-luck charm.

New Orleans Saints receiver Lance Moore motivated to make a statement

Kevin Spain, The Times-Picayune

As reporter earlier, receiver Lance Moore was the star of the New Orleans Saints morning workouts.

Moore said after practice that having a good showing wasn’t an option.

“I didn’t have a choice but to step up,” Moore said. “I don’t want to be the forgotten guy. I don’t want to be someone who gets lost in the rotation.”

Moore has a chance to get attention with Marques Colston and Robert Meachem missing time on the physically unable to perform list.

New Orleans Saints rookie tight end makes top play in afternoon practice

James Varney, The Times-Picayune

Rookie tight end Jimmy Graham, a third round pick out of Miami, made the top play of the New Orleans Saints afternoon practice Friday, a spectacular one-handed grab with a defender draped all over him.

The Saints were going 11-on-11 in first down situations when quarterback Drew Brees threw one straight down the middle to a streaking Graham, who was tightly covered by safety Roman Harper.

Live from Louisiana

By Pat Yasinskas

METAIRIE, La. –- Just got settled into a hotel near the New Orleans Saints practice facility and wanted to catch you up on some events.

  • As I previously reported from an airport runway in another NFC South city, Atlanta’s top pick, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, has agreed to contract terms.
  • Also, the Buccaneers announced they’ve signed seventh-round draft pick Cody Grimm, which probably bolts them right to the top of the list of Super Bowl favorites.
