NFL orders shops to stop selling ‘Who Dat’ gear
by Katie Moore / Eyewitness News
NEW ORLEANS – As the Saints’ appearance in their first Super Bowl gets closer, the marketplace is being flooded with Saints merchandise and memorabilia as businesses are looking to cash in on the euphoria, but the NFL is cracking down on the use of their trademarks, including the iconic phrase “Who Dat.”
But who really owns “Who Dat”? Does anyone? Who is a “Who Dat?” What is a “Who Dat?” Who owns the phrase, “Who Dat?”
They’re all questions Fleurty Girl t-shirt shop owner Lauren Thom is being forced to answer.
“The NFL is not a company that I want to rock the boat with, but I definitely want to look into it further to see what my rights are,” Thom said.
Two weeks ago, Thom got a cease and desist order from the NFL.
Remember Who Dat Nation – Lil Wayne SOLD us out. Weezy turned his back on New Orleans, his home town. He turned his back on the Saints. My friends and I have made a commitment to never spend a dime on him again.
This is from Master P:
“As a young child growing up in New Orleans, I always wanted to see the Saints go to the Super Bowl,” said P. “I’ve always worn black and gold colors as No Limit Jerseys and always represented for the New Orleans Saints by wearing their caps and jerseys. The comment Lil Wayne made about New Orleans Saints losing to the Minnesota Vikings, made no sense to me as a New Orleans native. This is our hope as a city after surviving Hurricane Katrina. This team should bring us together as people. I understand that he has the right to have his own opinion and comment or even root for another team if he wants to.
It’s just disappointing to hear this coming from a brother who was born and raised in New Orleans, made money off his music representing the city of New Orleans, talking about it in his lyrics. I’m from Uptown New Orleans and I don’t care who the Saints play against, how good the opposing team is, nor what the odds are against them. I would never go against my team, the New Orleans Saints, or root for an opposing team playing against them. We’ve been waiting to get to the Super Bowl for 40 years and if we do, we will celebrate in Second Line.
New Orleans Saints running backs have been very productive this season, and going into any particular game, you don’t know which one of them will have the best performance.
And, as you know if you’ve watched Super Bowls over the years, the game sometimes comes down to an unexpected player who has an unbelievable performance — remember Washington’s Timmy Smith against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII in 1988? You never know who steps up on the big stage and as you Saints fans can attest, you never know who will get the call as the Saints running back.
The Times-Picayune sports department is seeking those lucky New Orleans Saints season-ticket holders who were able to have their names called in today’s lottery for Super Bowl tickets.
In the first trip to the Super Bowl in franchice history, the Saints play the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida on Feb 7.
And The Times-Picayune wants you to share your lottery story with the rest of the area. If you are one of the lucky winners, please contact us at sports@timespicayune.com.
