Words fail to describe how masterful Drew Brees’ performance against the Patriots was on Monday night.
But numbers do.
The folks at Cold, Hard Football Facts have crunched the numbers and produced an argument that Brees’ five-touchdown manifesto was “the greatest regular-season passing performance in modern NFL history.”
And researchers at ProFootballReference.com support the contention.

New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush(notes) is making $8 million this year. Pretty good paycheck for a guy with bad knees, right?
Well, he better be saving his pennies because Yahoo! Sports’ Jason Cole is hearing that the Saints aren’t planning to bring Bush back in 2010. The problem is those troublesome knees. Because of them, Bush hasn’t played for the last two weeks, which isn’t helpful in the slightest.
For the nine games that he’s been in, he’s been averaging 9.3 touches a game and fumbled the ball three times.
Another issue is Bush’s salary. With next year being potentially uncapped, some players are going to be irked that they aren’t making what Bush is making when they are contributing far more to the team than him.

¦The Saints aren’t trying to go undefeated this year.
They’re just trying to win every game.
“You can’t do it any other way,” said Saints Coach Sean Payton, who ironically described his approach to being 11-0 in the exact way he described his approach to starting 0-4 in 2007 — by taking it one game at a time.
“I can’t speak for the players, but I don’t know where (the goal of an undefeated season) fits in for us. It’s not at the top of the list as much as winning this week’s game in Washington,” Payton said. “I know you’ve heard me say that, but I couldn’t tell you who we play three weeks from now, really.
“Certainly we’re aware that we’ve been able to play well and win 11 games, and that gives you confidence. And yet, the next challenge is up, and you really have to jump in and get submerged in it.”
The undefeated talk became unavoidable once the Saints cleared their biggest hurdle Monday night with a convincing 38-17 victory over the New England Patriots.

The Saints didn’t actually practice on Wednesday. Instead players watched film, ran and lifted weights.
But they listed a whopping 18 players on their injury report.
Four players would not have been able to practice had the Saints held a full practice: receiver Lance Moore (ankle/hamstring), cornerback Randall Gay (hamstring), linebacker Marvin Mitchell (hamstring) and cornerback Tracy Porter (knee).
Fourteen players were listed as limited: tackle Jermon Bushrod (thumb), guard Jahri Evans (toe), cornerback Jabari Greer (groin), defensive end Bobby McCray (back/knee), running back Reggie Bush (knee), linebacker Scott Fujita (knee) running back Mike Bell (knee/neck), running back Lynell Hamilston (shounder), linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar (wrist), tight end Jeremy Shockey (elbow), cornerback Chris McAlister (knee), linebacker Jonathan Vilma (knee), running back Pierre Thomas (wrist) and center Jonathan Goodwin (ankle).

The last time I saw the New Orleans Saints play the Patriots I distinctly remember how impressed I was with the Patriots’ game plan.
Throughout a 34-17 rout of the Saints in 2001, it seemed like the Patriots were one step ahead of New Orleans on every snap. When the Saints blitzed, the Patriots called a screen pass. When the Saints called a screen, it seemed like the Patriots were waiting for it.
On Monday night in the Saints 38-17 win, the coaching mismatch favored the Saints. Sean Payton and his staff got the better of Bill Belichick’s bunch. They seemingly were a step ahead of the Patriots all night, and Belichick and his staff had no answer for the Saints’ game plans on either side of the ball.
