New Orleans Saints beat the Washington Redskins 33-30 in overtime

By Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune December 06, 2009, 4:20PM
LANDOVER, MD.

Garrett Hartley’s 18-yard field goal in overtime capped an unprobable comeback by the New Orleans Saints, as they squeaked by the Washington Redskins 33-30 at FedEx Field. The Saints remain undefeated at 12-0.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees had another incredible game, going 35-of-49 for for 419 yards and two touchdowns.

Robert Meachem had a huge day, with eight catches for 142 yards and a touchdown. He made a ton of big plays in the game, key catches at the end when the Saints needed them and he scored near the end of the first half after stripping a defender who had intercepted a pass and returning it for a touchdown.

Why does Jeff Duncan have to pee on our parade?

The Who Dat Nation has risen up and lashed out against Jeff Duncan and the Times Picayune for writing a negative drama laced story about Bush and the Saints.

This is the offending peice of garbage. The Media will do or say anything to “create” a story.

Here are some of the comments below:

from kewlbrees on nola.com: for the life of me i just cant understand why jeff you wont to print a article like this . it just dont make no sence you you work for a new orleans paper u live in new orleans .

even if everthing you say is true why bring that junk up we goint to 12 an 0.cant you find someting postive to write about in a 11 an 0 season going for 12 an 0

it seems like you are trying to start crap you no all this will do is cause problems . are you just trying to destroy us cause talk in the locker room

jeff just answer one question for me why now why when getting ready for the playoffs you write this trash

they is a bussiness side to pro football i dont no how it works so i am calling on saints fans am i wrong to challage jeff on this article is it just bussiness or should this stuff be written about in the off season

i hope i am wrong but it looks like jeffs is trying his best just to stir up trouble. maybe i am over reacting

i be the the first to admit i not the sharpen knife in the drawer when it comes to the bussiness side of pro football

but could someone please tell me why this article should be printed when we going down the wire to the playoffs. on the day we could take the south me personel i thank it is pure crap , not saying wheather it true or not but why now

as saints fans we all ought to tell jeff what we thank of this article ; but being i am pretty dumb to the bussiness side i wait for you guys reaction maybe it is fair game maybe he is just doing his job maybe it just me sees someone trying to destroy our season

ok i shut up

Here are some other comments:

nofanatic: No need to shut up kewlbrees.

You are right that this story has no place right now. These guys are trying to do the unthinkable for us that have watched them for years…..go to the Superbowl and win.

Jeff is right about the injuries but also failed to mention that in the two games before the bone bruise Bush looked like a different back. He was finishing plays, not going out of bounds and hitting the hole hard and quick. Regardless of how Bush plays when he returns I see at least a restructured contract next year. But that is for next year.

Put a lid on this crap until after the season Duncan.

Kewlbrees: we got the best overall team i sen in 30 years evertime we step on the field we breaking old records . we playing as a team that is our core of our power it is one player not even brees not even the offense ,the defense feeds off the offense and the offense feeds off the defense total team work

i am bias i am a saints fan but i haver in my 63 years seen a team work as well as these saints total team work from top to bottom

even payton an willams trhey work togother never seen a better defense an offense except maybe dikta an ryan an they ened up destroying each other it seems like payton an willams are a well oil machine

my point why cant jeff write about that why cant he write about the best team the saints have ever put on the field

boy this makes me mad of all the things to write about

monroesaint: Jeff, I understand the need to produce a new article, but certainly there are many more positive stories to share about this great season. The sports writers should be an extension of the fans and the team, sharing in the excitement of this magical season. We understand the business side, and know that many players, not just Reggie, will undergoe scrutiny by team officials regarding their value versus their salaries, but these discussions are for after the season. During the season, this team has EARNED the right to expect our support, praise and excitement for their accomplishments. Let’s continue to write about the positive impact of our great team and this incredible, never-before-seen success; regardless of when and where it ends. I know you love this team as much as we do – write about that.

Take the time to read them all. For as lame as the story is, the swift reaction from the WHO DAT NATION makes me feel a bit better.

Now its back to focusing on the Redskins!!

New Orleans Saints have plenty of motivation in this week’s ‘trap game’

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

December 06, 2009, 6:00AM

WASHINGTON – Can you avoid a trap game if you see it coming?

That’s the question the New Orleans Saints will answer today at FedEx Field,  as they put their 11-0 record on the line against the 3-8 Washington Redskins.

All the warning signs are flashing.

The Saints are coming off a short week of rest and coming down from the emotional high of Monday night’s emphatic 38-17 victory over New England.

They’ll be out of their element,  playing outdoors in fairly frigid temperatures,  expected to be about 40 degrees.

Inside the game: New Orleans Saints at Washington Redskins

By Nakia Hogan, The Times-Picayune

Inside the game: New Orleans Saints at Washington Redskins

Kickoff: Noon at FedEx Field,  Landover,  Md.

Coaches: Sean Payton (36-23 in four seasons,  all with the Saints);  Jim Zorn (11-16 in two seasons,  both with the Redskins).

Keep an eye on …

Marques Colston

After going through a bit of a slump in consecutive games against the Panthers and Rams,  Colston looks to have returned to form in the past two games.

In Monday night’s 38-17 victory over the Patriots,  Colston was especially effective catching the ball and picking up huge chunks of yards after the reception. He caught four passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. He also had a 68-yard catch-and-run,  his longest of the season,  that set up another score.

Reggie Bush has become just another face in New Orleans Saints huddle: Jeff Duncan

By Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune

December 06, 2009, 6:00AM

Reggie Bush told reporters Friday he expects to play against the Washington Redskins today.

Bush has missed the past two games with a painful bone bruise in his left knee. So his return to the lineup is welcomed news for New Orleans Saints fans and fantasy football owners worldwide.

What he didn’t say is if he expects to play a lot. Or well,  for that matter.

Bush has not played very much or particularly well this season,  his fourth with the Saints.

To say it’s been a disappointing season for the speedy scatback would be an understatement. In nine games,  he has 484 yards from scrimmage  —  277 rushing,  207 receiving  —  and ranks 116h in the NFL in all-purpose yards with 564. He would come close to compiling those numbers in one game at Southern Cal.

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will be all business against Washington Redskins

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

December 05, 2009, 6:00AM

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is headed back to Washington this weekend,  and Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell is on high alert.

Although Williams,  the former Redskins defensive coordinator,  insists he holds no ill will toward the organization for passing him over for its head coaching vacancy two years ago,  his former defensive pupils expect him to unleash a little revenge on the field Sunday.

“Gregg’s always fired up,  but he’s really going to want to beat the Redskins because he feels like he should be the head coach here, ” defensive end Phillip Daniels told The Washington Times this week. “He’s going to bring everybody. I wouldn’t want to be Jason on Sunday.”

Veterans Mike McKenzie, Chris McAlister capitalizing on second chances

By Nakia Hogan, The Times-Picayune

December 04, 2009, 6:00AM

Not long after members of the New Orleans Saints‘ coaching staff worked out and signed veteran cornerback Chris McAlister a few weeks ago, Coach Sean Payton returned to his office to find a sticky note on his desk.

Mike McKenzie had called to say he was healthy and available,  too. He was offering his services to the Saints’ suddenly banged-up secondary.

Payton and General Manager Mickey Loomis discussed their options. Soon afterward,  Payton phoned McKenzie to set up a workout.

Like McAlister,  McKenzie was sharp. And for the second time in two weeks the Saints signed a veteran cornerback coming off an injury.

Before they can go undefeated, Saints can clinch division against Redskins

Associated Press

With so much attention focused on the New Orleans Saints being undefeated, it would be easy to overlook the fact that they are on the verge of clinching the NFC South.

The Saints look to win their second division title in four years when they visit the lowly Washington Redskins on Sunday.

New Orleans (11-0) is one of two unbeaten teams, along with Indianapolis. The Saints continued their dominating play with a 38-17 win over New England on Monday night.

New Orleans’ ninth victory by double digits came against the only franchise to go undefeated during a 16-game regular season.
